Why I write

I am not a professional writer, the reason being that I’m afraid that I will be confined to it for the rest of my life and it will not be enjoyable anymore. When I must be a barnacle that anchors itself on a rock, I witness everything the rock experiences. Even the gradual erosion that pounds at the rock, that brings it ever closer to becoming a nobody. The tanzanite waves splash on it, weathering the rock down. The rock weathers down, and so does my interest in it. (I am aware that there are some published authors that follow the Imagination Igloo. I’m not trying to persuade you to quit. This is just my personal opinion.)

But I still like to write. I write because I find comfort in writing and writing makes up for my abysmal speech. If you’d hear me speak, you’d hear a lot of contradictions and confusing words. Then you’d think I was a complete liar. I’d do much better by writing what I have to say and then reading it.

I write because I’m fascinated by how words don’t literally form pictures when reading stories, like a Wordle. But then they come together in a person’s mind to form a visualization. Cool, isn’t it?

I write because my imagination is an empire now, and I want to conquer new territories. It’s been doing this since who knows when. Unlike a lot of imaginations, my imagination hasn’t reached its downfall yet. I don’t think it will, so long as I keep on writing.

I write because I want certain things to happen, and writing makes them come true, both literally and figuratively.

  1. Personally I’ve read better articles from amateur writers than their professional counterparts. This article for example was down to the point, with enough details to keep me reading and not scroll to find the good stuff. So kudos to you, because I do that very thing with the majority of “professional” pieces I read!

  2. Hey, I love what you write about the imagination. I never want my imagination to get any smaller. It’s one of the most entertaining things. I was wondering if I could include some of your words in a book I’m working on where real people who write share about writing. It’s to inspire people to write and fall in love with writing. Your name, age and location would be included and all credit would go to you for your words.
All good if you’re not interested, just thought I’d check.

    1. I’m interested, but I’m a little private and don’t want my age revealed. Does location mean the city I live in? I prefer not to reveal the city I live in, but I live in Southern California.

      1. No worries at all. State is fine since lots of people from around the world are in the book, so I may even just go with country.
This is what I’d love to include: ‘I write because I find comfort in writing and writing makes up for my abysmal speech. If you’d hear me speak, you’d hear a lot of contradictions and confusing words. Then you’d think I was a complete liar. I’d do much better by writing what I have to say and then reading it.

It’s what fits with the rest of the book and the target audience. Let me know if that’s okay.
        Thanks so much!

  3. Hey what makes anyone a professional writer anyway? (cash?? maybe, being acknowledged by peers, big deal!! ) all the training in the world doesn’t make you a great writer. I used to look at other writers and think, ‘I could never write like that, that’s amazing’ now i see it as, ‘I write like me and that’s what sets me apart.’ You are amazing in your thoughts and a great writer. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything that i’ve thought, what crap writing, it may be different, unique, a world away from what I do but…I believe a great writer is one that just writes as they have passed the fear of being judged on their writing, the rest then will come. xx

    1. True. Professional writers aren’t necessarily great writers. Professional journalists aren’t necessarily great journalists. As a matter of fact, I’ve read a few reports and articles, and they’re bad in terms of writing. A good writer is someone who can tell stories in his or her own voice, in my opinion. A professional writer makes money out of what they write. Thank you!
